Sector heatmap
Every S&P 500 sector, ranked by the day's move.
How to read it
Each bar is one of the eleven S&P 500 sectors, through the Select Sector SPDR ETF that tracks it, over the chosen range. Leaders and laggards show where money is rotating: defensive sectors (staples, utilities, health care) tend to lead when investors are cautious, cyclical ones (technology, discretionary, financials, energy) when they are confident.
Pick a date to measure every sector from that close, and switch sectors on or off; the S&P 500 itself (SPY) is there to compare. Rebased draws up to six sectors from 100 on the range's first day, so the paths can be compared, not only the end points.
